CWB

Cantilever Wall-Mounted Bench

The CWB cantilevers from a concrete or CMU wall with no legs and no footing. The result is a built-in appearance that reads as part of the architecture, which no catalog piece can match. Its minimal visual footprint works well in tight or high-traffic spaces where floor area matters.

When to Specify the CWB

Specify the CWB when there is a structural wall to mount to and the design calls for seating that reads as built-in. It is the right choice in circulation-heavy areas, narrow corridors, transit environments, and anywhere keeping the ground plane clear matters for maintenance or sightlines.

Two constraints to confirm early: the wall must be concrete or fully grouted CMU, and the CWB is available in straight configurations only.

How It Mounts

Anchoring method. Anchored to the face of a concrete or CMU wall using contractor-supplied wedge anchors or equivalent. Suggested minimum is 1/2″ diameter with 4″ embedment.

Substrate. Minimum 3,000 psi concrete or fully grouted CMU. Verify edge distance from anchor to wall edges, and confirm wall depth behind the anchor is adequate to develop full embedment given the bracket steel thickness.

Shipping and assembly. Brackets and bench ship assembled together. Backrest assemblies ship separately. Mount bench sections to the wall first, then attach the backrest to the brackets.

Key Design Criteria

ParameterLimit
Seat depth17.5″ standard (backed); 23.5″ maximum (backless), set by the cantilever moment limit
Seat lengthNo limit continuous; typical max 8′ per section
Seat heightSet by mounting height on the wall. Specified per project.
RadiusNot supported. Straight only.

The 23.5″ backless depth cap is a real engineering limit, not a catalog preference. Because the bench cantilevers, seat depth drives the moment at the wall connection.

Two Forms

BB · Backless

Cantilevers from a concrete or CMU wall. No legs, no footing. Minimal visual footprint, suited to tight or high-traffic spaces.

BE · Backed

Cantilevered bench with integrated backrest. The backrest is a separate engineered component mounted to the wall above the seat.

Backrest-only is not offered on the CWB. If a backrest needs to be added to existing construction, that is the SWB-BRO on a seatwall.

Why the CWB Is Straight Only

Curved configurations are not supported by the bracket geometry. If a project needs a curved bench, the SWB and GMB both curve. The SWB is the alternative where a seatwall exists or can be added; the GMB is the alternative where the bench can sit on grade.

Materials and Finish

Supports are mild steel: sandblast cleaned, epoxy primer, then a superdurable powder coat top coat.

All mounting plates at the concrete interface are 304 stainless, sandblasted and powder coated as part of the assembly. DM Braun uses stainless anywhere steel bears directly on concrete, because abrasion at that interface can wear through a coating and expose mild steel to rust. The stainless plate isolates the mild steel supports from direct contact with the substrate.

All assembly and anchoring hardware is stainless steel.

Powder coat color is specified by name from the DM Braun standard color chart. Many RAL colors are available as custom.

Options

Armrests. Type 2, the board-mounted armrest, is available on the CWB. It screws into the underside of the wood boards, can be located at almost any position independent of frame support layout, and is field-retrofittable. Type 1, the frame-welded armrest, is available on SWB and GMB only.

Edge profiles. Four standard radii: 1/8″, 1/4″, 1/2″, and 3/4″. Specified on the project detail at CD phase.

Skirting. Available, though not a typical CWB configuration given the cantilever condition. Contact DM Braun if it is under consideration for a project.

Specifying the CWB

Use the five-part product code through SD and DD. Example: CWB-23L-ST-BE-K is a cantilever wall-mounted bench, 23L board pattern, straight, backed, in Kebony.

At CDs, send dimensions, substrate conditions, and detail options. DM Braun produces the project-specific detail sheet.

Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of wall does the CWB need?

Concrete or fully grouted CMU, 3,000 psi minimum. Confirm the substrate before final specification.

Can the CWB mount to a stud-framed or veneer wall?

No. The bench cantilevers, which puts significant moment into the wall connection. It requires concrete or fully grouted CMU.

Can the CWB be curved?

No. The bracket geometry does not support curved configurations. Consider the SWB or GMB for curved layouts.

A curved bench option is available, but falls outside of the limits of BraunMark. DM Braun can work through this with the design team as a full custom item.

How deep can a backless CWB be?

23.5″ maximum, governed by the cantilever moment limit. Backed configurations use the 17.5″ standard depth.

Who supplies the anchors?

Anchors are contractor-supplied. Suggested minimum is 1/2″ diameter with 4″ embedment. All other hardware is stainless and supplied with the bench.
